Wound Care at Home – A Simple Guide

Looking after your surgical wound is critical to prevent infection and support healing.

Here are the basics:
- Keep the dressing clean and dry for the first 12 days
- Change dressings only as advised – don’t pick at scabs
- Look for signs of infection: redness, swelling, very hot, pus: but the knee will always be slightly warm and swollen after surgery so this is normal.
- Use prescribed topical creams or ointments only after a fully healed scar has formed usually 4 weeks after surgery
- Avoid swimming or soaking the wound until fully closed

We will give you a complete printed and digital wound care leaflet after surgery.

Remember: clean hands = happy wounds!
